WHY 5% OF ANGLERS CATCH 95% OF THE FISH

It’s a pretty disheartening statement, but the truth is that a small proportion of anglers do catch the majority of the fish. How then you might ask, do I weave my way into that top bracket and what the heck are these guys doing that I’m not? Here are characteristics of top anglers to contemplate and try to incorporate into your fishing. If you can master and embody these traits, you too may be among the top performers.

TRAIT 1: KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge is the key to success in most aspects of life. Fishing is no exception. The more you know about the target species and the habitats they reside in, the more equipped you will be to find them. The same applies to fishing techniques and equipment. The better your understanding of gear function and when best to apply particular techniques, the greater your chance of catching fish.

TRAIT 2: AN ABILITY TO THINK LIKE A FISH

Top anglers have a great imagination. Close your eyes and try to envisage how a fish sees the world. Think about how they would behave in response to avoiding predators, hunting prey or dealing with environmental conditions. What are they afraid of and where do they hide? Where do they lurk as they hunt prey? Where would they rest or shelter from the elements? Once you?re on the water put this logic and forethought into action. It’s incredibly rewarding when one of your ideas proves correct.
For some really good insight, jump in the water with a mask and snorkel and observe the behaviour of fish. Watch how they move, how they interact with other fish and how they utilise structure and habitat. This kind of insight is invaluable.

TRAIT 3: EXTENSIVE ON-WATER EXPERIENCE

Nothing really beats on-water experience. This is where most of the knowledge and insight emerges. Even the very best fishermen will get rusty if they?re not up to date with the current conditions or fish behaviour at a particular location. Fish as much as you can and absorb all of your experiences.

TRAIT 4: CONFIDENCE

Confident anglers catch fish. This is one fishing x-factor that many underestimate.  Confident anglers believe in their abilities and the techniques that they employ. They embrace the challenges of fishing and work towards solutions that put more fish on the boat. On the contrary, anglers who hesitate, change lures frequently, get frustrated or give up easily will always struggle to consistently catch fish. A negative perspective will cloud judgement and result in poor casting. Don?t get down and out. Believe in yourself and your equipment and put your skills into action.

TRAIT 5: ADAPTABILITY

Top fishermen are very creative. They instinctively come up with ideas to resolve fishing challenges. Fishing is a dynamic activity. There are a host of environmental, biological, and behavioural conditions that need to be considered at any given time and these parameters can combine in a myriad of ways. To get the most out of fishing, an angler needs to be able to adapt to these scenarios and changing conditions.

Try to keep these traits in mind and work on them on and off the water. Stay positive and believe in your abilities and you’ll be catching more fish in no time.
