The Silver Trevally is one of the smaller Trevally of the species. They are considered a real sports fish by anglers around the world and a real favourite of Aussie fishos. They are found world wide.

Silver Trevally have a number of other names including, White Trevally, Blurter, Sand Trevally, Silver Bream, Skippy, Skipjack, Skipjack Trevally and Trevally.

Silver Trevally is a smaller sized fish in the Trevally family on average growing to around 35cm. The Silver Trevally is distinguished by a deep, rhomboid-shaped body.

HOW TO IDENTIFY TREVALLY, SILVER

Silver Trevally, not surprisingly, are a silver coloured fish and are distinguished by a dark black. Silver trevally can reach (rarely) 1m and more than 10kg but 2kg Silver Trevally are most common. The mouth is relatively small with rubbery lips. You will see an obvious black spot towards the rear edge of the cheekbone. The soft dorsal and anal fins are dusky yellow at the base. The caudal fin is dusky yellow, while the pectoral and pelvic fins are white. Juveniles have between 5 and 7 dark bands vertically on their sides.

WHERE TO CATCH TREVALLY, SILVER

Silver Trevally are found in bays and coastal waters, including estuaries. The adults form schools near the sea bed on the continental shelf. Schools found at the surface are normally located above reefs and a rough bottom. Silver Trevally can be found on the Northwest Cape in Western Australia and southwards, along the entire southern coast and Tasmania and then as far north as southern Queensland.

HOW TO CATCH TREVALLY, SILVER

You’ll have a great time fishing for Silver Trevally. They are great fighters for their size. Like many Trevally species, they make for good fishing on especially on light line (3-8kg).

They respond well to berley and they absolutely love peeled prawns and small pieces of squid. Silver Trevally can also be caught with soft plastic fishing lures and other lures including small spoons, leadhead jigs and small minnow lures. Berley works well.

As for bait, they are taken on baits including half Pilchard, Bluebait, Whitebait, cut fish baits, squid, prawn, crab, pipi, nipper or cunjevoi. Consider the food that is found natively in the area you are fishing.

You will also find Silver Trevally around inshore reefs, while winter is the best time of year. They can also be found in deeper water near a reef.

When fishing for Silver Trevally over reefs, braided fishing line with a fluorocarbon leader is highly recommended when casting soft plastic fishing lures. Casting and retrieve works best over other fishing techniques.
