WAYS TO KEEP YOUR GEAR SAFE AT A CAMPSITE

One of the most common mistakes I see when camping is gear that is lying about or unattended, practically asking to be stolen. Camping is a great time to have happy times and create beautiful memories. However, staying at a campsite can sometimes put you close to thieves. When we are relaxed outdoors, it is easy to slip up and leave our belongings unattended.

Here are some ways on how to keep your gear and anything, for that matter, safe when you are camping.

USE YOUR CAR

If you have a car, lock your valuable things inside when you’re leaving your campsite or when you have to go to bed at night. Your locked vehicle is one of the safest places to lock down important belongings. The boot is the best place as nothing can be seen from the outside.

KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS CLOSE

Keep your area at the campsite tidy with your belongings close. Messy and unorganised campsites are more likely to be the target of thieves.

KNOW OTHER CAMPERS

Knowing other campers doesn’t have to be a long talk about your lives. A short ‘hello’ or a simple smile with a little bit of chat with other campers around you is fine. It will be difficult to judge who’s most likely to steal from those who will not, but keep an eye on everyone just to be fair. Watch out for someone who looks or wanders around the campsite in an unusual manner.

HAVE A CHECKLIST

List only what you really need for camping and pack only the items you will be needing at the campsite. You can use that list to regularly check all items are accounted for.

ASK FOR STAFF HELP

If there are trusted staff at the campsite, you may be able to leave some items with them while you go on a hike, for example. Some campsites have lockable storage facilities. Find out what services your intended campsite offers before you go.

SET YOUR OWN SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM

We’re now living in a world of high technology, and setting up your own surveillance system is now possible. Cameras with motion detection help you keep an eye on your campsite while you’re away. They come in a wide range of advanced features including SMS alerts that notifies you of the present situation. More campsites are also installing surveillance systems, so management can keep an eye on everything and everyone.

Surveillance systems at a campsite are a great deterrent to crime as well as providing evidence.

It’s easy to relax and slip into a dream world where everyone has good intentions, especially when everyone is so friendly at a campsite. I prefer to follow a few basic rules so I can relax knowing our gear is secure.
