WAYS TO GET MORE INVOLVED IN YOUR DOG’S LIFESTYLE

Bonding and sharing your dog’s lifestyle doesn’t just extend to sharing a walk a couple of times a day. The more involved you get with your dog, the more rewarding the experience is for both of you.

In my case, changing to a more active lifestyle and getting my dog to join was only to shift some excess weight after Christmas and New Year’s, but actually, I found that sharing the experience of running and getting in shape together with my four-legged friend made the whole experience more rewarding.

Since then I have tried to get my dog more involved in my life and my hobbies but in reality, I feel like he is the one calling the shots and I am getting more involved with his lifestyle.

SWIMMING

If you are lucky enough to live close to the beach, there is nothing like taking a run and a swim in the mornings to get into shape, and your dog will love you even more for it. If the beach isn’t so close, make the trip with your dog when you can.

AGILITY

I used to think dog agility as a sport was for the pushy parents of the dog world, but after we gave it a go, I have to say, I’m hooked. The dogs have to complete an obstacle course while the handler offers guidance. Both of you run the course at the same time and the winners are the dog and human pair who complete the course in the shortest time.

HIKING

Hiking is not for everyone but it is a very good way to get extremely fit. I’ve kitted my dog out with his own backpack where he keeps all of his supplies and I’ve also sorted him out with paw protection for longer walks.

TRACKING

We play a fun game together where I put a treat inside a glove and hide it somewhere on the route before we go for a walk. Then while we are out walking together, he has to find the glove. He loves the challenge and I enjoy thinking up fun and creative ways to hide the glove.

Walking your dog is just the start. There is nothing wrong with getting your dog involved in an active lifestyle, and it will be good for you to get off the couch too.
