Naked In Nature

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF GETTING NAKED OUTDOORS

What is it about being in a remote, visually stunning, natural location that makes us want to get naked. We can’t get enough of it. Every summer social media feeds fill up with young females showing their boobs to a glassy lake, men jumping into pools with nothing but a hand to cover their sensitive areas and groups skinny dipping in the sea. There is no doubt that when we get away from civilisation, something inside us screams “get your kit off”.

But there is some science behind it. Researchers have found there to be plenty of health and social benefits to getting undressed and letting it all hang out. That being said, if you are going to enjoy the outback or a remote stretch of alpine trails, lake or coastline, just make sure you aren’t breaking any laws in the process. I can’t see promoting the health benefits to a riled police officer as being enough to get you out of trouble.

YOU LOSE THE BACTERIA

Originally, we developed and wore clothes to keep dirt off our skin. Dirty people got more diseases and contracted parasites. However, in reality, all we did was create breeding grounds for bacteria. Ticks, lice, and bacteria cling to warm, sweaty clothes. Stripping down and losing the clothes takes off the bacteria and critters that have made a home in your warm garments and is actually cleaner.

YOU BURN FAT

When your body is cooler and unprotected from the elements, your body’s healthy brown fat supplies kill off the harmful white fat cells. Shivering can actually help make you healthier as it depletes unhealthy white fat levels. Getting undressed in the cold actually makes you healthier.

YOU BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

More exposure to sun gives your body a much-needed vitamin D boost. The sun strengthens your immune system and helps you keep viruses and diseases at bay. Just remember to liberally apply sun cream to whatever body parts might be exposed.

IT HELPS FEND OFF ALZHEIMER’S

Don’t ask me how, but scientists have discovered a correlation between not wearing shoes and increased cognitive function. Dr Norman Doidge offers an explanation. He says that constant sense stimulation on the soles of your feet helps increase the efficiency of neuron connectors. Walk around barefoot often and enjoy all the sensation it brings.

IT HELPS KEEP A HIGH SPERM COUNT

Tight fitting jeans and leggings raise the temperature of your testicles which can hinder sperm production. Being naked helps with fertility and maintaining a healthy sperm count.

Next time you get away from it all and feel nature’s call to de-robe, not only is a thrill, it is also doing your body a favour. Throw away the gym membership, load up with sun cream and get outside.
