QUICK GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL KAYAK BASS FISHING BY FEELING THE BAIT

It takes a bit more than luck to regularly catch big Bass. Bass fishing is extremely popular with kayak fishos around the world and Australia. We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you catch more Bass by feeling the bait.

WHAT IS FEELING THE BAIT

Feeling the bait means to know what the bait is doing. You can feel the bait by using the rod tip, the handle and the fishing line resting over your thumb or between your fingers to feel what the bait is doing. Add your eyes to mix because some movements are so slight you might not feel them in the way you thought you should have.

HOLD THE ROD LOOSE

Holding a rod tightly makes it harder to feel subtle strikes. Loosen up your grip on the rod.

USE A LONGER FISHING ROD

A longer rod helps for longer casting and also helps for picking up the line faster and for better hook-ups. Experience shows there is no problem bringing in a 3kg Bass on a 7’ fishing rod.

SWIM SOFT PLASTICS

Simply cast the bait and lift rod to create a swimming action. This is the easiest way to create a swimming that fish can recognise by providing an arc and falling motion.

CONCENTRATE

This piece of fishing gear will never fit in a tackle box. There is nothing like good old fashioned concentration to help you land more Bass.

REMEMBER OBJECTS ARE IMPORTANT

Bass are object orientated fish. This example has been demonstrated in a fish tank. Put a rock in the tank with Bass and they will head towards it. Always fish for Bass with this in mind. Fish around rocks and any other structure that represents cover for Bass.

KEEP THE LURE IN THE WATER

Don’t expect to get a strike every time you cast your lure. At the same time, casting and retrieving is something you need to do. Keep casting and be patient. A lure in the water is a lure that catches fish.

CAST WITH ACCURACY

All fish are lazy to some degree. The closer you can get the lure the better. Practise your lure casting as above and keep practising.

STAND UP AND FIGHT YOUR FISH

This is one of the most advertised ways of fishing on a kayak. It takes some skill. If you are going to land big Bass, you need to get comfortable standing on your kayak while fishing.
