QUICK GUIDE TO SAFE BOATING

It’s proper boating safety to review your boating safety rules before you depart, whether you are experienced or not. Take a look at these boating safety ideas designed to help you create your own boating safety rules.

KNOW THE WEATHER

Getting on the water without knowing the weather is just plain crazy. With so many apps that give us up-to-the-minute weather information, there is just no excuse. If the weather changes before you depart and you see dark black clouds, it is time to reconsider.

HAVE A DEPARTURE CHECKLIST

Nothing should ever be left to memory. Always have a pre-departure checklist to make sure no safety rule or precaution has been overlooked.

USE YOUR COMMON SENSE

One of the biggest elements of boating safety is common sense.

ASSISTANT CAPTAIN

You always have a captain and you should always have an assistant skipper. This person should also be experienced with all areas of your boat and boat safety.

HAVE A FLOAT PLAN

Always make sure you let someone know your float plan. It should be written down because people can forget. A float plan should include where you are going and how long you are going for – someone should know when you are due back.

LIFEJACKETS

This goes without saying.

AVOID ALCOHOL

The idea of having a beer or more when boat fishing sounds like a great idea but getting drunk is just asking for trouble when you are at sea. You are best to save alcohol for later when you are celebrating that catch. Studies show the chances of getting into trouble on a boat double under the influence of alcohol.

SWIMMING LESSONS

If you can’t swim, it is time you learnt. Proper boat safety includes being able to swim. If someone is on a boat and they can’t swim, they need to let everyone know.

TAKE A LOCAL BOATING COURSE

There are a lot of regulations and customs you need to be familiar with. You may be required to attend at least one course. Even if you are not legally required to attend a course, it always pays to be informed.

CHECK YOUR VESSEL

A boat needs to be inspected regularly. Know the requirements and know your boat meets more than the minimum requirements.
