QUICK GUIDE TO OFFSHORE KAYAK FISHING

When it comes to normal offshore fishing, there is a perception that the further you go out, the better the fishing becomes. When fishing on a kayak this is not always the case. Experience shows that when fishing from a kayak, travelling far out from the coast is not always required.

FISHING 1KM FROM THE COAST

Some of the best kayak fishing can be found 1km from the shoreline. There are rarely boats in this area as many of them head further out to sea.

OFFSHORE KAYAK FISHING

The stealth offered by a kayak compared to fishing from a boat allows for many passes over the same spot. With a kayak, you can get right in the thick of feeding fish. Experienced kayakers know they don’t always have to travel out as far as the boats go. Kayaks are particularly effective in shallower water around 8-15m.

LESS COMPETITION FROM BOATS

Add the fact that there are fewer boats closer to the shoreline to the stealth factor of your kayak and you have a great chance of catching more fish. Less competition is always a good thing. Fishing pressure on these areas is often minimal, which compares to heavy fishing in estuaries only a few kilometres away. Deep reef systems further offshore are also subject to heavy fishing. The shallower reefs all within easy reach of the beach are the perfect domain for the kayaking angler.
