QUICK GUIDE TO GREEN BOATING

Whether you are new to boating or have many years under your belt, always keeping up with green friendly practices is an absolute must for all boaties. There is no excuse for damaging the environment. As boaties, we impact the environment. If we can have a positive effect, all the better. Going green is not a painful exercise by any means and actually can be very rewarding.

We encourage green friendly practices from camping to kayaking and fishing and beyond. Take a look these tips to better boating practices and let us know if you have anything else you can add to look after Australian waters.

DON’T SPREAD THE SPECIES

Whether it is plant or animal, it is not our job as boaties to encourage the spread of species. Don’t move live fish from one waterbody to another. Dispose of bait properly – definitely do not just throw it into a lake or river.

GREEN FRIENDLY CLEANERS

Whatever chemicals we use end up in the water. Whether you are washing off your boat at home or cleaning off fish entrails when on the water, use environmentally friendly products or natural products. Vinegar is excellent for cleaning mould, for example.

MAINTAIN YOUR MOTOR OR SWITCH TO ELECTRIC

Aspirated motors are very messy, especially if they are not maintained properly. There is simply no excuse for leaking oil and fuel into our waterways. The best option is always an electric motor.

LEAVE LESS WAKE

Apart from disturbing others on the water, the waves you make also damage fragile shorelines.

SAVE YOUR TACKLE

The worst thing any boatie can do is throw unwanted fishing tackle into the water. There is simply no excuse. If you don’t want a piece of fishing tackle anymore, take it home and dispose of it properly.

CATCH ONLY WHAT YOU NEED

If you can’t eat it, then it is time to catch and release it. Know your legal limits while also knowing how much you and your family can really consume. A freezer so full of fish because you are sick of eating

NEW PAINTS AND COATINGS

Modern paints are water-based and are the only type of paint you want on your boat. Only clean up your boat with soap and water or more environmentally friendly products while you stay up-to-date with advances in boating supplies.
