campsite cooking

Camping can be a very affordable way to spend time with family and friends. If you are not prepared and buy what you think you need at the last minute, camping can cost you a small fortune.

We are all about helping you to enjoy the outdoors in a way that is easy on your wallet. With that in mind, food is one of the biggest ongoing expenses, especially if you have hungry kids to feed. These meals are easy to prepare and are as low cost as it gets.

Pancakes are so easy to make and they are extremely affordable. Whether you go for the whole homemade deal or you simply buy a box to mix from the supermarket, it pays to prepare before you go. Make up your mix and freeze it rock solid in a ziplock bag and use it to keep your cooler cool while it is hard. Simply cut the corner of the ziplock bag and you’ll probably have the best looking pancakes you have ever made.

The ziplock bag just has a thousand uses when you are out camping and you might even start applying some of these ideas at home. Pre-mix your scrambled eggs or omelette and freeze again for easy storage in your cooler. You can always re-use a plastic bottle if you want something more sturdy. One thing is for sure, you never need to take eggs in the carton with you when you go camping.

This one is a no-brainer. Instead of making the pizza flat, simply make a roll and wrap the ends. Fill your pizza with anything you like. You can use a bread pan or wrap in aluminium foil. It’s best to seal in plastic kitchen wrap until you are ready to throw it on the campfire. We bet you are getting ideas and can taste them already.

You just can’t go wrong with beans just about any kind when you go camping. Baked beans are everyone’s favourite, well, the kids at least. For those with a more mature palette, you can add spices, meat and vegetables into the mix. The best thing about beans in a can is the fact that you already have something to cook them in.

Add anything you fancy to a foil wrap of hotdogs or sausages and you get a gourmet meal that tastes great and keeps the whole family happy. With or without bread, this one is easier to prepare that hotdogs themselves. Preparation is the key with all this meal so you simply put your tasty foil wrap on the campfire or cooker.

What can we learn from these easy and affordable meals? The same low-cost meals you may choose for an easy dinner at home can be made a little more convenient when you prepare. The best meals are the easiest to cook so you have more time to enjoy and spend less time preparing and doing the dreaded dishes. Anything you can prepare in a ziplock bag is much easier to deal with and dispose of when you are camping.
