QUICK GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT LENGTH KAYAK PADDLE
The most important consideration when choosing a kayak paddle other than quality is the right length.
A short paddle will mean you end up banging your hands or the paddle on your kayak. You will also run out of energy fast because you will be using your upper body to get the paddle in the water. A long kayak paddle causes the kayak to swing in the water, not to mention you will get tired when digging those high angle strokes needed for extra speed. A long paddle means you will end up overworking your arms.
The general consensus for the best length paddle is to add your height to the width of your kayak. Taller paddlers with wider paddles need longer paddles.
Most paddles are sized between 210cm and 250cm.
For those who are active paddlers, sizing down 10cm is recommended. Extendable paddles offer flexibility for those who like to mix up the way they use their paddle when kayak fishing.
