We’re lucky anglers in Australia. We have one of the most extensive coastlines in the world and a variety of fish species to match. From the humble Whiting to the iconic Barramundi, we have fish that offer remarkable sport as well as excellent tucker.

Although there is an endless list of fishing destinations in Australia, we’ve assembled a list of 5 of our favourite fishing destinations. All of these fishing spots are ideal for exploratory fishing holidays with fishing mates or family.


If you haven’t heard of Cape York, you’ve been living in a cave! At the northern tip of Queensland and the gateway to the Torres Strait, Cape York is an angler’s tropical haven. The beauty of Cape York is its versatility. You can spend a couple of hours tucked up a creek chasing Barramundi and Mangrove Jack and then zip offshore to chase Sailfish or Tuna. Access Cape York from the ports of Weipa or Bamaga and explore.

From beach and flats fishing to reef fishing and offshore game fishing, Exmouth offers a variety of fishing options and a huge array of sportfish. Queenfish, Emperor, Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Billfish, Tuna and a host of other species are commonly caught in the waters off Exmouth. The Sandflats also offer the only reliable population of bonefish known in Australian waters.

Exmouth is also a stepping stone to the fish-rich waters of the Pilbara and Kimberley. Exmouth is a destination for serious anglers chasing serious fish.

Sydney Harbour might not be your typical idea of an exotic fishing escape but it has plenty to offer to anglers. Australia’s most populous city is also a great option if you need to entertain the family while you zip out to bag a few fish.

From feisty Bream to tackle-busting Kingfish, you’ll be surprised by the quality and quantity of fish that can be captured within sight of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Target species: Bream, Kingfish, Mulloway, Whiting, Flathead, Tailor, Trevally, Australian Salmon


Monster Bream, monster Flathead, and monster Whiting. Notice a trend? The Gippsland Lakes system is home to sensational temperate estuary fishing and some spectacular scenery to boot. The coastal fishing villages are quaint and offer another great option for family fishing holidays.

Enjoy Trout and Bass fishing in the freshwater reaches and some of the best estuary fishing that Australia has to offer.

The wild clear-flowing mountain streams of Tasmania are renowned for their remarkable wild Brown Trout populations. Tasmania is also home to horse-sized Black Bream and is a leaping point to access some the biggest southern Bluefin Tuna on the planet. Tasmania is a wilderness frontier where anglers can get lost in the surroundings and catch epic fish.

Target species: Trout, Bream, Tuna, Flathead, Whiting
