Man Washing Boat

ESSENTIAL TIPS ON TAKING CARE OF YOUR BOAT AND TRAILER

Your boat is an excellent investment, and you must know how to protect it. Knowing more about your boat helps you understand how to take care of it better. Only then will you know the right way to protect it.

Check out some of my tips on taking care of your boat.

CLEAN YOUR BOAT HULL

Cleaning your boat’s hull makes it look shiny and improves the performance of your boat. Regular cleaning is advisable especially if you’ve been in the polluted water too often. By doing so, you’re preventing hull corrosion, algae build up and prevent barnacle growth.

WASH STAINLESS STEEL

Wash any stainless steel parts with freshwater after every trip to keep it shining. Use a stainless steel polish to protect the surface from any stains, oxidation and avoid rust. Don’t use chlorine, bleach and brushes in cleaning the stainless parts. A clean and soft cloth will be fine.

KEEP THE RUST AT BAY

Continue taking care of your boat even if signs of rust are starting to show up. You can still prevent rusting with the use of some oil. Use a wire brush to lose all foreign particles. Then remove the rusted parts, and make sure to wipe it with some oil that can fight rust or an aerosol spray.

SERVICE YOUR MOTOR

Just like your car, servicing your motor and keeping it well tuned will result in better performance and lower fuel consumption.

MAINTAIN YOUR TRAILER WELL

Failure to maintain the trailer of your boat often leads to trouble. You have to pay attention to your trailer, and regular maintenance must be done to get longer efficiency.

APPLY GREASE TO OTHER PARTS

You can apply grease to other parts of the trailer including the coupling, winch and spring. Keep all moving parts lubricated as much as possible to avoid corrosion and rust. You can apply some coating to the non-moving parts for additional protection.

Taking care of your boat and trailer will save you costly outlays in the long run. Boats can easily get expensive if you don’t constantly maintain them. Be prepared for that before you buy one and don’t find out the hard way as I did.
