Old 4wd

EASY WAYS TO MAKE YOUR 4WD APPEAR BRAND NEW

I recently sold my Toyota Landcruiser. Going through the whole performance of selling a 4WD really irritates me. It is a lot of hassle for the seller. 4WDers are a discerning bunch (myself included) and I spent a lot of time answering questions and arranging viewings only to find the buyer was unwilling to part with their cash at the end of it.

But I did learn something useful out of the whole experience. Each time a potential buyer came to look at it, I would explore new and novel ways of making my 10 yr old vehicle look new. It was no easy feat. Each method was more imaginative than the last but I now feel like I can give some solid advice to anyone who wants to get their 4WD looking new again.

USE WD-40 TO GET RID OF BUGS

The first step of giving my 4WD a facelift was to remove the dried on dead insects that had accumulated over the years. I had never even noticed them before but when I first came to clear it up and my eyes suddenly took in all the dark splattering on the bodywork, my 4WD suddenly looked like the site of an insect genocide.

Getting 10 years worth of insect organs off your body isn’t easy. Spray some 4WD on them (don’t get it on the windshield or windows) and leave it to set for ten minutes. Once you come back to it, you should find the former critters come off much more easily.

INVEST IN A STEERING WHEEL COVER

Rather than replace the whole wheel, if your steering wheel is showing some signs of wear and tear, a $10 cover will disguise it. Chances are your buyer won’t even notice there is a cover on it. Get one that matches the cockpit and you should get away with it.

USE TYRE POLISH

A decent tyre polish can help your tyres appear much newer than they really are. It is inexpensive and easy to apply. Just give them a coat in the morning before the buyer shows up.

PUT TOOTHPASTE ON THE HEADLIGHTS

If your headlights are looking a bit cloudy, you can restore them to their full brightness by getting an old toothbrush and applying a liberal coat of toothpaste.

CHANGE AND CLEAN THE AIR CONDITIONING FILTERS

When I came to sell my Landcruiser, the AC had been so neglected it felt like an old asthmatic man blowing on you through a straw. I cleaned out the whole system and got rid of all the dust and grime on the filters. It felt like the car could breathe again and the AC was noticeably better. Best of all, it hadn’t cost me a penny.

Take years off your 4WD’s appearance with these easy and inexpensive methods. The best advice I can give anyone selling their 4WD is to persevere. Take pride in its appearance and persevere, you will find a buyer eventually.
