touring apps

Whether you are on a big lap of Australia in your motorhome or you are just on a road trip to touch base with some of your favourite fishing spots, as long as you have network service, your mobile phone will serve you well. It seems there is an app for just about anything these days but some are better than others.

Here are a some of my favourite apps for when I am travelling around Australia and I find of particular use when I am in a region that I know little about.

This free app can save you a lot of data cost by finding you public wifi spots throughout Australia. The app is uses Google Maps. That means it will use your location to find wifi spots close to you. It also has features so that you can choose what type of location you are looking for. I use it to decide whether I want to stop at a restaurant or petrol station along the road.

Available for: iOS and Android

BYO is a great way to reduce the cost of a meal at restaurants. I love BYO and that’s why I love Zomato. The Zomato app allows you to find dining based on numerous variables. It’s definitely the way to find where you can BYO on the fly.

Available for: iOS and Android

If you want to keep a diary of your journey without it being a mishmash of your life on Facebook, the Live Trekker app is for you. Being map-based, you create your journal, your travel story through points on a map. Your snapshots and notes are saved as locations along your route.

Available for: iOS and Android

Want to get off the road for a while? Need a place to rest and have a drink? Be careful not to have too many drinks with what you find on this app. The Happiest Hour app lets you find all the food and beverage specials in and around your location. It is a great way to get a good deal when you are looking for a rest stop on the road.

Available for: iOS and Android

Tripadvisor has been around for so long, it has become extremely credible when looking for just about anything. There’s nothing like being able to read what others had to say about a particular experience, hotel, motel, hostel or adventure. All reviews are by signed in users. You know they are for real if they have a number of social profiles.

Available for: iOS and Android

This app is awesome and will liven up any night. All you do is point your smartphone towards the heavens and SkyView gives you information on the stars above. It is great for camping and fishing. Just be careful to use this one if you are driving at night!

Available for: iOS and Android

This is my favourite for finding the cheapest domestic (and international) flights for Australia. Skyscanner gets results from numerous booking engines, which saves a lot of time comparing results from different websites.

Available for: iOS and Android
