BASIC RULES TO FOLLOW WHEN ANGLING FROM A KAYAK
Kayak fishing is loads of fun, especially when you are wearing the right gear and know how to keep yourself dry. Take a look at these basic rules to fishing from a kayak and catch more fish while having more fun while you do it.
DRESS FOR THE WATER
Too many newbie kayakers dress for the weather. The smart thing to do is dress for the water. From wading in the water to launch your kayak to falling over, wear what you can swim in. It just makes safety sense.
RIG YOUR KAYAK TO FLIP
Even the most experienced kayak anglers flip their kayak. You don’t want to lose all your gear when you flip your kayak. Rig your kayak to flip so you keep your gear even when your kayak is upside down in the water. If you want something to stay dry, make sure it is in a sealed container or a plastic bag.
KNOW YOUR BODY FOLLOWS YOUR HEAD
If you keep your head up there is more chance your body will stay upright. If you lean out of your kayak to look at something, your body is going to follow you. If your kayak is rolling and you want to stay out of the water, keep your head upright.
GIVE YOURSELF A LENGTH OF LINE THAT MATCHES YOUR ROD
Unlike normal fishing, you are sitting down when you reel in that fish or bunch of weeds. By giving yourself a rod’s length of line, you will be able to get your tackle in your hand with ease.
