10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR INSTANT NOODLES

Instant noodles have long been a staple on my camping trips. Even just the smell of them reminds me of being in my tent. But after a week away from your kitchen in the bush, instant noodles definitely lose their charm and you start craving for flavour. Here are 10 simple ways to give your instant noodles an upgrade to keep your palate satisfied.

PEANUT BUTTER

Adding a spoonful of peanut butter brings a flavour of Thailand to your noodles. Crunchy peanut butter is also a great energy source and rich in protein to keep you fuelled for your daily hikes.

ADD SOME SAUCE

There are a variety of sauces that can enhance your noodles. Fish sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and even honey make excellent accompaniments to a pack of instant noodles. While you won’t want to be carrying a bottle of sauce around with you, getting your hands on some sachets is a big perk.

MEAT

One of the easiest things to do is to simply add some meat to give the noodles some more flavour. Pork and chicken go great with your ramen noodles and bulk out the serving to make it a more complete meal.

BOILING THEM IN STOCK

Boiling your noodles in chicken or vegetable stock gives them a fuller flavour. It also gives you the option of creating something similar to Vietnamese noodle soup. If you have some vegetables or meat, throw them in and you have a camp-style Vietnamese Pho.

CHEESE

If you haven’t tried instant noodles with a homemade cheese sauce you are missing out. A simple cheese sauce can be made with cheese, milk and butter and simply add your noodles. If you want the top to go crispy and you have the facilities, baking it for a few minutes in the oven afterwards rounds off this instant noodle dish with a twist.

EGGS

A fried or boiled egg on top of your instant noodles offers a little more sustenance and protein. Or, if you have more time, frying off your noodles with an egg once they’re cooked gives you homemade egg fried noodles.

AN INSTANT NOODLE OMELETTE

Fry some onions or tomatoes in a pan and add the noodles already boiled, along with a few eggs and you have a delicious, instant noodle omelet.

INSTANT NOODLE PANCAKES

Yes, that’s right, you can make tasty instant noodle pancakes. Break up the cake of noodles, mix it with diced onion, flour and an egg and fry it in a hot frying pan. They may not sound like much but with some sour cream and some seasoning these provide a successful evening meal.

A MESSY INSTANT NOODLE PIZZA

Topping your friend instant noodles with tomato sauce and cheese and finishing it off in the oven, gives a delicious messy instant noodle pizza. For those nights when you are craving a pizza but all you can find are instant noodles. This recipe is definitely a winner.

CHOCOLATE

For those with a sweet tooth, or for a quick energy boost, coating your raw noodles in melted chocolate and letting them set in the fridge or freezer overnight gives you a crunchy chocolate snack. I have known some people to add ice cream to make a dessert dish, but I will let you be the judge of that one.
